Outdoor coordinator report for December 2006

December 12, 2006

Much as I’ve tracked holiday tree shifts. I’ll be asking for tentative attendance information for all outdoor events from the scouts and adults in preparation for permits, supervision and transportation. I’ll keep the expected attendance information fresh on the web site for troop, patrol and adult use as well. So stayed tuned for your very own special email invitations to all the upcoming exciting outdoor scout adventures. -)

Klondike derby:

Jan 12-14. Information available on the web at: http://monticello.avenue.org/mont-bsa/. I will get tour permits, line up transportation and secure adult supervision. I will be unable to attend this event.

Doyle River cabin camping:

January 27-28: I have Doyle River reserved from 3:00pm Friday, 1/26 through Sunday, 1/28 3:00pm. Sleeps 12. It is hilly 0.5 miles in to cabin. Picture. There is a nice but long 8 mile hike or shorter one-way 1.5 mile hike (3 total). Other activity suggestions encouraged. Please note that only the venture patrol may camp over night but all can attend the day portion. We can leave early Saturday and return for noon Sunday. I hope to attend this event.

Wintergreen Tubing:

February 19, 2007 is a family event. Wintergreen skiing opened just last Saturday but the tubing is not running yet. One person rate is $18/person/2 hour session but I’ll contact Wintergreen in early January for group rates.

Optional Timberline WV Ski trip:

Depends on scout interest, adult supervisors being available, PCM comments and funds (est. cost is $150-$175/person). “OPTIONAL” is a key word for this event. Program description for the scout program that Timberline offers — http://www.timberlineresort.com/scouts2006.asp.

Upcoming outdoor events for the spring

I will attend this Wednesday’s PLC at 7:00pm Pantops. We will tentatively select and schedule outdoor events for this March, April and May. Patrol leaders need to attend please.

Yours in scouting,

Gary

Troop Committee Meeting Notes for 11/20/06

December 4, 2006

Troop 37
Troop Committee Meeting
November 20, 2006

  1. What is an “active scout”? Based on the BSA information that Peter M. found online and the general discussion of the committee, all agreed that we could and should not create attendance rules for advancement.
  2. Recap of Cold Mountain Outing: From the adult perspective the trip went very well. Next time the Troop should consider doing two different hikes because the longer hike was a bit hard on the younger scouts. The older scouts showed some good leadership skills. Some of the scouts learned a hard lesson about over-packing. It had been a long time since the Troop did a weekend trip like this. Everyone learned something! The weather hovered right around freezing. Gary has posted photos online.
  3. Klondike is January 12-14. Potomac Appalachian Trail Trip will be January 27-28. Tubing at Wintergreen is scheduled for February 19.
  4. Treasurer Report: Signature power is now in place.
  5. Fundraising: Jack still has some Show & Sell Popcorn and Peanuts. We will try to sell this extra stock during our Christmas tree sales shifts
  6. Advancement: Next COH is December 18. Boys need to get their reviews completed during the next two Monday meetings. There are still some blue cards missing from camp. Chuck to follow-up with Peggy.
  7. Neil McLaughlin reported that the Men’s Club Pancake event went well.
  8. No updates for Training.
  9. No updates for Equipment.
  10. Merit Badge Discussion: There are too many on the schedule. We will encourage the scouts to cut it down to one a quarter. It was also suggested that some of the older scouts could teach some of the badges to the younger scouts. Peter will talk to the scouts at the next PLC.
  11. Tree Sales: Troop 7 parents are covering the money pick-ups for Albemarle Square. Boys are to sign up for shifts and Gary will create an online schedule for reference and hour tracking. Chris Westbrook is going to lead Albemarle Square set-up and Chuck is going to lead Pantops set-up.
  12. Holiday Party: This will happen in conjunction with the 12/18 COH. Christina Porter will organize the party. There will be a gift exchange: $10 maximum.
  13. Caroling on December 21. Peggy and Christina to organize hot chocolate and snacks. We will consider going to a nearby group home in addition to the elderly near the church.
  14. Next Boy Scout Roundtable: December7, 7:30pm Aldersgate UMC.
  15. Next Troop Committee Meeting: December 11.
  16. Check out all the Troop information at http://garybanks.wordpress.com/. Gary has posted contact info for Chris Alimenti, tree sales info, and a recap of the Cold Mountain trip!

Chris AlimentiMany scouts asked for Chris Alimenti’s email address. We have it — paintballchris98@adelphia.net. Also, please note that he has a web site to keep friends and family updated. Be sure to read the latest in the journal, view the photo gallery, and drop him a line in the guest book.

Troop 37 Monday 12/4 troop meeting

December 1, 2006

Hello everyone,

As a reminder for Monday night, remember to wear clothes that you could get painted and dirty.  DO NOT WEAR YOUR UNIFORMS.  If you or your parents have acrylic paints and small brushes please remember to bring them.  We will be making some crafts to sell at the Christmas Tree sales.  The tree sales are going fairly well right now but will really pick up in the coming week.

Thanks,

Chuck

Tree sales and hours worked

December 1, 2006

GaryI need your help tracking your hours actually worked for the holiday tree sales.

I will send an email to the troop on the following Thursdays: 11/30, 12/7, 12/14 and 12/21. This email will represent my inquiry to you about actual hours and dates worked (not expected hours worked). If I don’t hear back from you about your actual hours and dates worked then you will not be credited hours. When I receive your hours then I will confirm the hours with you and I will update this web page: http://www.people.virginia.edu/~gfb7c/treesales2006.htm

You can send me your information by email at anytime of course. You do not need to wait for my weekly email reminder. Please include any hours your parent or guardian worked with you so they get credit.

I really will appreciate prompt replies and/or notice as shifts are worked. I don’t want to get all the information sent to me on 12/24 for all scouts and all shifts <grin>.

So here we go … if you or your parent/guardian worked a shift(s) between 11/25-11/28 then I will gladly take your ‘time sheet’ information. Please send me your hours worked and what date you worked. If your parent or guardian worked then please let me know their hours as well.

Sales shifts on line at: http://www.people.virginia.edu/~gfb7c/treesales2006.htm

Thank you very much for your help.
